JUST DO IT....TO EMPOWER YOURSELF

Empowerment is not being more powerful than anybody; it’s about having equal rights with protection, support and justice. Empowerment is to feel free and able to do best in life. To a lay man life is full of mysteries. Finding a rationale to these mysteries is the journey of life. From impulsiveness to inquisitiveness from satiation of urges and desires one needs a comprehensive drive to lead a life of humanism and that is what is called empowering.

Life is a combination of love, intimacy, fortitude and energy. Energy is what separate with living and nonliving. The energy can be felt in many ways physically, psychologically and spiritually. To the scientist it is potential and kinetic. Whatever may be the interpretations, the human beings need the channelization of this energy in productive ways and in other words it is empowerment.

Empowerment and confidence are synonyms. Helping others are always good, but if the help turns to a shelter, first they feel comfortable, then they feel no worries there is somebody to help me, finally they will feel like ‘I am not OK’ and good for nothing. This results in the formation of an incapable individual. Building self esteem and self confidence in others while guiding them is very important to create empowered society. It is really significant that parents take due care to encourage children to do things for themselves developing a sense of initiative to empower them. They begin to learn valuable life skills which help them to be flexible and adjustable to changes in their routine and life and to develop social skills and become a best person.

The baby when starts to walk, fall down frequently. We help the baby to be strong on own feet. Even after, when the baby wants to walk fast he will fall down and hurt. What’s the response? Baby starts to cry and mom quickly lift up the baby and pampers and sometimes blames the floor to make the baby fall. That’s a message the baby recording in the brain, ‘the floor is not good, that’s the reason to fall down’. Like this starts the tendency, to blame others for even our fault or laziness. Also to believe, there are others to take care of me.    Here stretching out our hands to the baby, we can ask our baby to ‘get up, come forward, I am here, come and hug me, it’s Ok, next time you can walk more easily, now you are too small, this is the way to walk by your own, come on sweetie, you are getting strong, wow....you did it...’The baby got clear message, I have to walk carefully. You are empowering your baby by building self confidence.

When kids start their school, let them do their things by their own under your guidance and supervision. Such as to organise their school bag, fill their snack box with their favourite picks, lunch box and water bottle. By letting them do these tasks by themselves give them the chances to learn how to organise by their own. That’s the power experiencing by the kids. Don’t be a rescuer of your child to show how much you love them. That’s only blind love. If you want your children to be empowered you have to provide enough opportunities to do their own tasks by themselves. The chances to face problems and challenges always create some struggles to solve them. Help them to face and work on the problems which build patience and resilience and allow them to reach the goal and feel powerful in difficult situations. You will be surprised to see how they accommodate with the tasks and start doing by their own which makes both you and your kid more relaxed and appreciable and more empowered.

Teenagers may be allowed to make some decisions and also to take responsibility for their actions and decisions. Parents need to guide them when mistakes occur and to treat every mistake as a lesson which teach persistence and to master in it. Even if it is a risk, allow them to take up the risk under your supervision. This encourages them to learn life skills and help them to grow self esteem and give them a greater sense of self confidence in decision making.

During college years permit your children to choose their favourite subject. Let them go ahead and explore the heights in it to reach the destination to build up their beautiful and powerful life.

In case of women, in their middle and old age they play an important role in caring for grandchildren, enabling their parents to go for their work by taking it as a pride. But they are not at all rewarded while the costs to their own physical and emotional well being are pretty high. It is ironic that women who often spent a life time caring for others end up unhealthy, poor and have no one to rely on when they themselves become frail. Empowered women at this stage can easily overcome the mental and physical discomforts by doing yoga, volunteering and social activities along with their routine works.

Here comes the importance of self empowerment. Empowered persons can lead a quality life. Those who are empowered need to turn to the society, to empower the weaker section among us. In this context I would like to share the activities of All India Women’s Conference (AIWC), Aluva with our beautiful readers, which make us more and more empowered.

The aim of AIWC is to uplift and empower women and girls from inside enabling them to stand in the front line along with men. Some of the important activities are skilled training on tailoring, embroidery, fashion designing, beauty course, jewellery making, soft toys making, soap making, computer education etc. Crèches are run to accommodate the infants and kids of women who attend the programme. Day care centre for old is for keeping them active and vibrant in peer groups. Rural outreach programme on computer literacy is benefitting women without disturbing their work. Off campus and on campus workshops, seminar and camps on domestic and public violence, harassment at work place, gender equality, field sanitation and hygiene, anaemia detection, yoga and meditation, homestead farming, precautions against rainy season diseases, mudra healing, chakra cleansing, neurobics, nutrition, adolescent training, career guidance and goal setting are some of the topics covered in our programmes. We have a women library with more than 20000 books. Monthly review on a particular book is conducted in our reading club. We are keen to take up literary programme based on our visits and interviews conducted with empowered women. Above all each of us is committed to do empowerment acts as and when needed on routine basis even in our personal trips.

We are really recognised by the results of our programmes to increase the status and position of women in every walk of life. Gender equality assures both men and women to enjoy equal rights and to build up confidence in women. Women empowerment helps in the overall development of the family and reduces poverty which contributes for the benefit of society. Once the societies are empowered the world would absolutely change to a beautiful place to live in harmony.

In the world in general, still it is male dominated in all spheres of life such as social, economical, political and religious. Preference for male child as first born still exists among many families in the society.  The sons always get better education and healthy food over daughters in the rural areas. More over the inherent superiority enjoyed by the males are automatically pushing out the females in the home with high level of domestic responsibilities. The women thus are not able to participate in social, economical and religious activities. They are supposed to live their life in a second line, as a child under father, as a wife under husband and in middle and old age under sons or son in laws.

Women need to rise up, and things are now changing to a better phase. Now women are enjoying equality in education, employment and social rights. Even if this is the situation, women still suffer many hardships and unworthy treatment everywhere.

The best quality of women is her multi tasking ability. She can handle both home and office equally well. Women are always one step up than men being the undisputed owner of the human race by carrying them and breast feeding them.

We all are born with the same power.  There is no discrimination. Then from where and how comes the difference? Is it from the environment we live or from the traditional culture in our religion, society or nation? Off course, no doubt, it plays a great role in one’s life. In my opinion most importantly one is being moulded by the rules and regulations of their own family.

In childhood a child needs to be guided and disciplined to do right things. And during the growth it is clear in front of the child to find the beautiful paths through which to travel and reach the destination. Be brave and bold to choose your favourite things to build up. It is crystal clear; the empowerment is in one’s own shoulders. Know your strength; set a long term goal for yourself and for other weaker sections in your community. Be active to stay positive and vibrant. Strengthen your body and mind through yoga and meditation to have a peaceful soul and spirit to enjoy self empowerment.

Energy and Health

“A seed is a tree in its infinitesimal form”. When it is sown the sprout is magnified gradually into a tree. Similarly there is energy in human cells. When it is magnified by positive thoughts the world of wisdom is open to us. That is empowering self. Empowerment is self actualisation which is the ultimate aim of life.

We encourage a person to do or act by tapping the energy that is dormant in the person. Energy is a Greek word means ‘in work’. It is the capacity for performing work. We use the term motivation and empowerment based on the nature of the context in which the person is metamorphosing. Whatever be the person we adopt, we are aiming at the stratum of energy intrinsic in the person. The word energy seems to be very simple but in a deeper contemplation it is an obscure one.

Energy was a mystic power for our ancestors as it was beyond the limits of mental and empirical reasoning of that period. They realized the thunder of waterfall as mystic energy and the objects falling towards earth as occult energy. It has only an assumable existence even though it is a dynamic quality. As our scientific knowledge developed we differentiated the concept into various forms of energy such as gravitational, chemical, electrical, atomic, nuclear etc.

Einstein, the father of modern science brought energy into lay man’s knowledge by this outstanding contribution of the definition E = MC sq. The gift of energy is immeasurable to the modern world. At the same time it makes the world in an exploding condition by its devilish nature as it is evident by our agitation against the use of nuclear power and cyber conflicts. We know that we can prosper by its angelic power or perish within seconds by its devilish nature.

Energy reigns over everything, whether it is physical, mental or spiritual. The importance of energy in human development is fully recognised. In our physical world energy is related to the field of power engineering. In the metaphysical world the spiritual leaders are relentlessly advocating this invisible energy to identify and uplift for a healthy living. Suryanamaskar is a conscious contribution of our Rishis to boost up energy for immunity and health.  From the photosynthesis of plants and to the maintenance of body temperatures we need energy. Our epics give a pragmatic description of energy in the form of advice given by Lord Krishna to Arjuna that, “there is only one absolute energy -the omnipotence- and all the human beings are lateral realities of energy. One cannot conquer or destroy energy but can destroy only the entropy of energy or forms of energy which is transitional as evil.” It is what we are studying as energy can neither be created nor be destroyed.

Our human cell is a family of energy particles. The power plants of the cell- the mitochondria- are responsible for health and immunity. Transitional energy of positive thoughts keeps the cell impervious to disease while negative thoughts induce all kinds of illness. Meditative energy is the positive channelling of which gives immunity and holiness. Memories are stored in us as an energy pattern. Some memories are destructive beliefs that can bring out stress response and make one susceptible to illness of all forms which can easily withdraw the person from positive action.

Power of positivity is the gateway to accumulate vibrant positive energy that can help one to lead a healthy social life. They can make a change in their life to build up peace and bliss in the Universe.

Inner Peace through the Art of Mindfulness

Peace itself is soothing to the senses as if they have a craving for it. In our life this craving for peace is sustaining us from destruction and facilitating growth and development. Human beings are animated through the sense organs. The sense organs have certain reservations or limitations and above or below its limitations they become strained and functions are being trampled. In the modern civilized societies we can see restrictions are imposed by Law for freedom from civil disturbances. Interference, in thought, deed or speech or in any way, is hampering the tranquillity of persons. It is only through a state of harmony or concord of the sense organs with the environment people can thrive or else will perish. So the state of tranquillity or quiet by which mankind can live in harmony is termed as peace. Peace is the basement for hope and confidence. Love, good-will, openness, compassion and tolerance are the personal traits of humankind that are ingrained with the inner peace.

Everyone in the Universe needs peace. All wish to live in peace. We wish to have peace at home, at office, at travel, at party, at community and at sleep. We all expect a peaceful journey in our life. Peace is mostly related and concerned when we are able to stand on our own feet. Peace cannot be bought, peace cannot be provided, peace cannot be taken from outside or cannot be gifted. Peace is to be experienced from within. To enjoy peace, we need to sow the seeds of peace within and harvest the fruit of inner peace. Peace is the journey and way of life that ultimately the self is responsible.

I would like to share the experience in my life which motivated me to search for peace of mind. My daughter at the age of four lost one of her ear rings while enjoying weekend with the neighbourhood kids playing ‘hide and seek’ in the back yard. The backyard was full of dry leaves from the trees and plants, besides the untrimmed weeds. I noticed the missing while bathing her in the evening. She was not aware of the loss. I searched for it and didn’t get. It was a traditional art piece of gold earrings gifted by my mother. Immediately my grief turned into anger. I scolded and punished her forgetting that, it was my fault, not to wear the little one with the expensive and precious ornament. She cried a lot and was sad. I left her in her room not to move anywhere without my permission. After half an hour, I thought of solacing her since I was too rude to her. But to my surprise, I found her playing with her puzzles and games in her room. It was a revealing moment for me. Tears filled in my eyes with joy. I was so glad to find that she came up from the down moments instead of staying in the dark of sadness for long. She regained her composure by finishing the feeling and got engaged herself in the happy world. Something triggered in me about mindfulness and I felt ashamed about the mindlessness. I knew mindlessness is a pitiful situation making one live in the past and ruminating on the loss. This incident evinced in me that it is high time to find some measures for mind training. I and my husband joined the Simplified Kundalini Yoga Centre (SKY) of Vedathiri Maharishi. We learned the full course of yoga and meditation and mastered in the course. For the last three decades I am enjoying the art of mindfulness through meditations and also spreading the message through teachings helping others around us to live in peace.

Mindfulness is a simple method of mental training. It is a meditation focusing on your breath. It is a valuable technique to act on your mind to experience inner peace. Sit comfortably on a mat cross legged or on a chair with feet touching the floor. Place your palms up on your knees in chinmudra. Chinmudra is done by touching the tips of your thumb and index finger and keeping other three fingers straight. Focus on your breath as it flows in and out of your body. While inhaling, observe your thoughts coming in, the way it is struggling with you and let it go out slowly while exhaling. The thoughts come in and go and you can feel and experience that the thoughts are not staying in your mind anymore. This realisation helps you to understand thoughts and emotions both positive and negative are all temporary and it can’t make any strong relations with you unless you allow the emotions to live with you. Mindfulness helps to prevent stress, anxiety, doubts, selfishness and even to get rid of these more easily from your mind than before. This mindful awareness helps to increase memory and leads you to be optimistic, creative and innovative. It helps to see the world in a wider frame with more clarity and with a mindset to change the unwanted things in your mind to become wiser. Mindfulness helps to love you and love others. Helps to demoralise our desires, live in the present, balance our life physically, mentally and spiritually and to be the change we wish to see in the world. Mindfulness teaches us to forget and forgive and live in peace.

Mindful meditation is a clear path to realise your inner self and experience inner peace. Once you realise your inner peace keep working on it. Systematic and regular practices are needed to sustain inner peace. Set apart 15 to 20 minutes for inward journey through meditation to apply “oil and massage” in your mind with mindfulness. Early morning is the best time to practice mindfulness. During the day, if you feel disturbed or discomfort, a five minute mind conscious meditation will quickly bring you back in the present moment with positive thoughts and the ability to get in tune with others and the environment. This allows one to experience and enjoy inner peace. Once we find inner peace and sustain it then we can stay  in any adverse situations with peace of mind and radiate peace outward.

'We feeling'....an essential factor for Happiness

I and you make ‘we’. But the question arises is------Is it the ‘hypothetical we’ or ‘phenomenal we’? The phenomenal ‘we’ is the integration part of you and me, then there is unity and oneness. If it is the other way the oneness is lost leading to disintegration. That is what happening in our social arena. As a women’s forum it is very demanding to open up our mindset to the problem of natural integration.

The national integration day is being celebrated on November 14th to commemorate the birthday of the first lady Prime Minister of India Ms Indira Gandhi. A National Integration Council is also being functioning since 2nd June 1962 to rectify the diversities in view of the problems of communalism, casteism and regionalism. Much water has flown through the Ganges since then. It is very sad to say that still we are in the hypothetical ‘we’ and not for consolidating the unity to progress. Take the example of disparagement for selecting women for the legislative assemblies and parliaments. Men are reigning in great majority in almost all spheres even though they are arguing that women must be given opportunities but the bill for representation at both the houses of the parliament remains at large.

National integration is not a literary verbosity; it is a functional climax with the proper mindset for unity, harmony and development. We have been talking about decade after decades but the political socio cultural systems are becoming more and more rigid leading to decaying of values and hence unrest of the nation.

People who are patriotic can only bring integration in the nation. The divisive forces consider personal interest over national interest. The rapacity towards wealth, power and status is driving people to sabotage the national character of the state. Greed and corruption, under valuing humanity over religion, allegiance to castes to form vote banks, criminalisation of politics, corruption in education, disobeyance of constitutional rights, discrimination against women, vested interests of religions, fraudulence of bank loans, forced abortion of girl child etc. create a feeling of antipathy to the present state of affairs which in turn leads a negative outlook towards the bureaucracy and derange the integrity of our nation. Gradual frustration among the public may cause havoc.

A good constitutional structure with strict adherence to civic right and civic sense is essential which keep the interest of the nation above everything thereby bringing national integration. To achieve it empowerment of the masses especially women is a must. Women empowerment and social development are interrelated. Mother is the first teacher of the child. Values and virtues are to be inculcated in the early stages of the child development through the educated mother. So empowering and educating the womanhood is a pre requisite to the task and hence the role of AIWC is beyond doubt, very essential to get involved for achieving national integration.

Know you are the Infinite

Freedom is a state of being free. It means independence, liberty of action and power of self determination. In other words it is the release or recovery of slavery or imprisonment from one’s own thought, deed and emotion.

Freedom is synonymous with responsibility. In life we have to balance personal freedom with personal responsibility. Both are related and cannot have the one without the other. The quest of freedom is fulfilling our own purpose of life. Freedom by virtue is to help to bring justice where it does not currently exist and alleviating sufferings caused by the various forms of limitations. When we stop restricting ourselves and help the world to come out of the restrictions we are enjoying real freedom.

Freedom help us to utilise the opportunities in front of us. Freedom also allows an individual to take the responsibility as a person and as a citizen for a worldly order and peace. If you are not free or not feeling that you are free, the result is that you are suffering from fear. Fear can very well establish in a possessive and self-centred person. Fear within you can easily put you in the prison of greed, jealous, anger and ego. To enjoy freedom is to get rid of the fear within you and turn to be creative, positive and productive person. Know that you are the infinite, then why should you fear?

If we ask an individual, are you happy and free in your life?

The answer may be, Yes I am. Why is it so? It may be due to the fabulous thinking that he and his wife are in executive positions with high salary, their children are studying in the most prestigious school in the city, owns a waterfront dream house in a posh locality, both of them own expensive cars etc. And the final comment may be that, I am very happy and really blessed. Just think for a moment. He/she feels that he/she is free because of the material riches. Let’s think about his/her interior riches. Is he/she aware about it? Are we aware about it? Nothing is in our own control. A minute, itself is enough to change the materialistic world upside down. Then the rich, happy and free person will experience the pain of loss, the fallacy of possession and suffers slavery. Here comes the importance of freedom.

Real freedom is nothing else but detachment from material things, to others, to pride, to the money, to the past and the ego. Freedom is the knowledge, to get away from the need for possession, my wife/husband, my children, my house, my car, my job, my friends, my community likewise. When we think of what we have, we will never have enough. But when we think what we need, we will always have the feel of fulfilment. The only way to enjoy freedom and happiness is to practice detachment.

My early fifties, a period of three years, was a university for me to understand about me and the world around me. The lessons on every aspect about dear ones, relatives and friends opened my eyes. That helps me to become a different and honestly a better person.

I was and am a normally optimistic person. I have understood the fact that some relationships, circumstances and incidents are there, where everybody are not willing to accept, appreciate, understand or even love back. I started practicing law of detachment which helped me to have healthy thoughts, feelings, actions and relationships. I realised that my goal is to love myself to fulfil my responsibility to serve the universe, enjoying freedom. Now I have set emotional boundaries, to get peace, happiness and to enjoy freedom.

Being a human, even now there are people and situations which tend to feel negative attitude which causes stress. I can easily overcome the negativeness of these situations and now they are less frequent and less intense. Freedom helps me to live my life according to my choices. Freedom along with detachment is the genuine path of life which is absolutely amazing.

Those who are completely free can love all unreservedly and no longer enslaved to the opinions of others. Freedom enables one, the pure will to work without expecting any rewards and enjoy life, living in the moment. They are wise and empathetic and are free as a bird in flight.

Freedom in a true sense is about inner freedom to know self and others as pure souls and become aware, we all are the beautiful children/ souls of the supreme soul. Swami Vivekananda has taught as, “We are ever free if we would only believe it, only have faith enough. You are the soul, free and eternal, ever free, ever blessed. Have faith enough and you will be free in a minute,”

Beauty is a State of Mind

At dawn on 1st June 2015, I looked out of our apartment with my grandson to experience the nature that was before us, the snowy mountains of Tredbo, Melbourne, Australia. The hills and valleys, peaks and lows, the plains and slopes, the trees and shrubs, the buildings and passages, the roads and paths were all blanched and covered by snowfall variegating a thrilling experience of flamboyant beauty which was really mesmerising. The Mother Nature was exhilarating us to enjoy her pristine beauty on the first day of winter itself.

It’s an evening today on 25th of June 2015 in San Antonio at Texas, USA; I am before HEB, a super store with my three year old grandson. I asked for the expansion of HEB for which I got an instant reply “Here everything beautiful”. It sparkled in me the beauty of innocence which is full of love, care and compassion. These two incidents fascinated me to scribble this article on beauty.

Is it beauty the power of appearance, may be, that is why beauty contests are being carried out. On a second thought, it can be realised as the lower part of the continuum of beauty. Real beauty is not in make up or make over, it is something good inside a person. According to Ninon do l’ Enclos “That what is striking and beautiful is not always good, but that which is good is always beautiful.” So goodness is the ‘Pinnacle of Beauty.’

On seeing a flower, a scene or a piece of art, we say “it’s beautiful.” So beauty is seen as in our perception. But there are so many things which cannot be seen but felt and so we say that “the nature of beauty is intrinsic as the quality and its importance is that it crowns one with love and compassion. Something happens inside that exalts the soul in what the real beauty is.

How is beauty shown or expressed? It can be shown in behaviour and action which leads to the attitude of a person. Beauty is showing firm values without letting down integrity shrivel under any situations. Beauty is the light that whittles away darkness from the universe.

Beauty can be seen in a bipolar dimension; being external and eternal. External beauty is perishable which is transitory to the sense organs. A man in good vices sees his wife as angel and in bad vices sees her as devil. His definition of beauty is in the mode of infatuation of his mind. But real beauty is eternal which is the perfect glow with an inner radiance and confidence as shown by great legends.

Beauty is the refined state of mind and soul. Stillness and loveliness are the characteristics of beauty. The basic core of everything in the universe both animate and inanimate is kindling for the reciprocity of love and compassion – that is the real essence of beauty.
